New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed a batch of petitions challenging the acquisition of land by the government for the expansion of the Indira Gandhi International Airport project.

Upholding the single Judge's order, a division bench of Chief Justice MK Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Khanna directed a committee, set up to monitor the developmental works including electricity and water supply in the land allotted to the displaced people in Rangpuri, to expedite the work so that displaced people could shift there.

"The land (in the village Nangal Dewat) was acquired in urgency in view of the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and expansion has to be immediately undertaken if India is to hold the prestigious sporting event," the Bench observed.

In pursuance of its order, it directed BSES and the Delhi Jal Board to ensure electricity and water supply in the allotted land by October 25.

Justifying its order, the court observed that a larger public interest was involved in the case and any delay could "…cause damage to the prestige and reputation of the nation."
