Pune: The Airports Authority of India will invest around Rs20 crore on various projects which will expand Pune's Lohegaon airport. These projects include a new administrative complex, construction of new hangars for non-scheduled small aircraft owned by private companies operating from the city, and the setting up of a canopy on the city side of the airport terminal building.

The projects are scheduled to be completed over the next 12 months.

According to Lohegaon airport director, PSRK Sudhakar, work on these projects is likely to commence by the end of the year. Tenders are likely to be issued next month, he added.

Construction of a new administrative block will create more space at the terminal building as CISF and AAI offices will shift to the new complex.

The airport handles nearly 7,000 passengers a day through 40-odd services that operate from Pune.

The new administrative building will also house a VIP lounge with independent access to the airport terminal building.

Sudhakar also said the airport needed hangars considering a number of small aircraft, owned by private companies, were regularly parked at the airport.

All these projects form a part of the extended works for the ambitious Rs100-crore airport modernisation plan that was launched in August 2008.
