Puducherry: The newly enlarged airport at Puducherry will commence domestic operations from 10 October with low fare operator Spice Jet launching services to Bangalore, the state assembly was told.
The ministry of civil aviation has provided clearance from to Spice Jet to operate the flight.
Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfishers have also said they would depute technical teams to check the feasibility of operating flights from Puducherry.
Puducherry's airport was expanded in two phases with a Memorandum of Understanding being signed between the Puducherry Administration and the Airports Authority of India in June 2007.
Under Phase-I, the existing runway was extended by 260 metres which would enable ATR type aircraft to land. Ground support facilities were also boosted.
Phase-II involved extending the runway by an additional 1100 meters of runway by acquiring 200 acres in neighbouring Tamil Nadu state, in a bid to operate large aircraft.
