Hunter UAV kills
two insurgents on its first flight, creates a first in army aviation history
13 September 2007 A
Hunter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) engaged and killed two suspects planting
and improvised explosive device (IED) on a major road used by American troops,
during its first flight near Qayyarah, in Nineveh province, Iraq, on 1 September. A
scout weapons team (SWT) from the 2nd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th
Combat Aviation Brigade observed two suspected unknown enemy fighters engaged
in suspicious activity by the roadside. The SWT requested support from the Hunter
UAV. The pilots guided the Hunter to the scene, where it readied
for a strike mission and delivered precision munitions, killing both unknown enemies
and marking a first in army aviation history. Commander
of the Unmanned Aerial Surveillance Company Capt Raymond Fields said the successful
attack would set the tone for Army Aviation to use more weaponised unmanned vehicles
instead of manned platforms to save lives, both in the air and on the ground.
