The foundation stone for a new airport at Hassan, in Karnataka, will be laid on Sunday 2 September. Fomer prime minister HD Deve Gowda, who is the national president of Karnataka's ruling Janata Dal (Secular) party, will lay the foundation stone of the airport.

Jupiter Aviation and Logistics Private Ltd (JAL), established in 2005 by Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Chandrashekar, will execute work on the airport. Minister for Public Works HD Revanna told the media on Saturday that the commissioning of the airport in Hassan would trigger economic growth and generate employment in the region.

JAL has also signed a collaboration agreement with France-based ESMA and EADS Services to set up aviation training schools in four places in the country. The first one is likely to be at Hassan. It has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Thales and Air Australia for the setting up of a civil aviation academy, which might also be located at Hassan, JAL sources said.

The passenger capacity of the airport will be 10 million and cargo handling will be two million tonnes by 2030. JAL is committed to investing over Rs1,350 crore in the next three years, sources said.
