Calcutta: The Rs1,550 crore, Calcutta airport modernisation project will be offered to private parties, with the responsibility for monitoring the project being vested with the Airports Authority of India, according to the civil aviation secretary, Ashok Chawla. The project would be implemented on a turnkey basis.

"A detailed project report is being prepared and the global tender will be floated soon," he added. "The contract will be finalised by September after bidding."

Tasked with providing technical guidance to the contractor, the airports authority is expected to issue an expression of interest to bidders soon.

Work on the modernization is tentatively scheduled to start in 2008, and is expected to be complete by the middle of 2010. Upon completion, the Calcutta airport will get new terminals and other facilities in line with global standards.

Chawla also mentioned that the Cooch Behar airport would be operational by August, and that a private airline was keen to start operations from here. Chawla also outlined plans for an upgrade of the air network in the Northeast of the country.
