Passenger and aircraft movements at Coimbatore Airport have soared, thanks to the ongoing economic boom and the entry of low cost airlines. The industrial centre in Tamil Nadu is now being linked to destinations in South East Asia too. SilkAir will operate a thrice weekly service from Coimbatore to Singapore from 28 October.

The flight becomes Coimbatore's second international connection, since Indian Airlines (IA) already operates a thrice weekly Coimbatore-Sharjah flight. Sri Lankan Airlines is also reported to be interested interest in operating up to five services a week between Coimbatore and Colombo.

Airport sources said there had also been enquiries about the feasibility of a Coimbatore-Dubai flight from a Gulf-based airline. In the domestic arena, Spice Jet is planning to operate services from Coimbatore to Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Chennai.
