Hassan airport construction to start soon
21 Aug 2007
The Karnataka town of Hassan will soon have a greenfield airport on a public-private partnership basis. The Karnataka government has decided to acquire 2,500 acres of land for the project, and will soon lay the foundation stone.
The project has been awarded to Jupiter Aviation and Logistics, on a design, build operate and transfer (DBOT) basis. The Hassan airport project was formulated in 1957, and the government acquired land for it in 1966, 1972, 1997 and 1998, totalling around 400 acres.
Earlier this year, deputy chief minister B S Yediyurappa announced the decision to establish the airport in the state budget for 2007-08, and the government decided in July to start survey work on 2,500 acres of land for the project. Rs22.10 crore has been earmarked for land acquisition.
Chief minister H D Kumaraswamy is due to meet PWD officials to finalise the viability gap funding and the concession agreement with the developer, government sources reported.
