Mumbai: A colonial legacy in the field of civil aviation, harking back to 1944, may be set to change, with various airline companies, including Air India, asking the civil aviation ministry to write to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to change the existing registration code for Indian aircraft - VT.

The code VT stands for 'Viceroy's Territory,' and was designated for Indian aircraft in 1944, when the ICAO was formed.

According to aviation ministry sources, most Indian carriers feel that the ministry should ask the ICAO to change the code. The airlines include India's premier carrier, Air India, whose chairman and managing director, V Thulasidas, apparently feels the same way, if reports in the media are anything to go by. Thulsidas, according to reports, has said that he too has spoken to the ministry regarding the issue, asking it to request ICAO for a change.
