Birmingham-bound PIA flight in major mishap, shuts down Islamabad airport

Islamabad: A Birmingham-bound Pakistan International Airlines Boeing-777 got stranded on the runway of the international airport at Islamabad after one of the engines failed before take off, forcing the pilot to slam on emergency brakes. This action caused the plane's tyres to catch fire, which was subsequently put out by the fire tenders of the Civil Aviation Authority.

The Pakistan International Airlines flight NO PK 791 was bound for Birmingham from Islamabad. The mishap occurred a few seconds before take off early Thursday morning, with 165 passengers and 9 crewmembers on board.

Sources said quick thinking from the pilot prevented what could have been a major mishap. All passengers and crew members were boarded off safely.

Till last reports, the faulty plane was still stranded on the runway of the airport, which was forced to close down as a result. International and domestic flights were disrupted as a result.
