Houston: Continental Airlines announced Thursday it had decided to launch nonstop service between its New York hub at Newark Liberty International Airport and Mumbai, India, earlier than originally planned, following a positive market response to the proposed flights.

According to Continental, the service will now begin on October 1, 2007 (eastbound). Continental will initially operate the service, CO48, four times a week — departing New York Liberty on Sundays, Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays — with the frequency increasing to a daily service, effective October 28, 2007. All these changes are subject to government approval.

The return flight, CO49 (westbound), will depart Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport on Monday, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday. Flying times will be approximately 14 hours 50 minutes eastbound and 16 hours 15 minutes westbound.

Continental had announced in March this year, that it would launch daily service on the route effective October 30, 2007, subject to government approval. It had also said that it would operate Boeing 777-200 aircraft on the route.
