New Delhi: India Post, the country's venerable postal service, is all set to take on the private express industry by launching a dedicated freighter service. The department is in talks with the national carrier Indian to lease up to three Boeing 737-200 aircraft.

According to reports, the department will start operations with a single aircraft, which would primarily cater to the postal and courier requirements of the North East regions. At night, the aircraft would be used to carry couriers and parcels between the four metros.

These plans may mesh well with domestic carrier Indian's own plans to launch a dedicated  freighter service in the country. Indian has been toying with the idea of converting its ageing fleet of 11 Boeing 737-200 aircraft into freighters, and has been in talks with several private logistics players for strategic tie-ups.
