Kolkata:  India's premier low-cost operator, Air Deccan, has announced the launch of daily, non-stop flights connecting Kolkata to Dimapur via Imphal. Dimapur and Imphal will now be connected for the first time.

The airline also said that flights from Kolkata to Cooch Behar, Bodh Gaya, Rourkela, Jorhat and Jamshedpur would also be introduced.

Addressing a press conference here, Captain GR Gopinath, Air Deccan's managing director, also said that the airline is "keen on starting a cargo division," which will "function as a separate subsidiary". He said that the subsidiary is expected to begin operations by the end of the year.

Touching on recent controversies that have engulfed the airline regarding passenger tickets, Capt Gopinath said: "We have had to shift to a new ticketing system and in the migration process, data on about 25,000 passengers were lost. As a result, passengers often turn up at the airport with valid tickets but we do not find their names on our lists."

Talking on the subject of the black-marketing of the airline's cheap tickets, Capt Gopinath said: "I know there have been frauds which is why we have a stringent process of verification in place, including checking ID cards."
