Germany's Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Europe's largest application-oriented research organisation, today signed a framework memorandum of understanding (MoU) as ''Technology Resource Partner'' with India's Department of Heavy Industries (DHI).

Representatives from public sector engineering major Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) were also present during the signing of the agreement, which will support and augment the ''Make in India'' programme through increasing the innovation and technology prowess of Indian industry.

The MoU envisages creation of a road-map for technological development for Indian industry, identifying and plugging technology gaps, implementation of identified projects in manufacturing, and working with various stakeholders in government, industry and academia for increasing cooperation in applied research.

The MoU signed was later exchanged with German counterparts through enterprise asset management software (EAM) before the two heads of states met at Hyderabad House, New Delhi.

Fraunhofer- Gesellschaft is the leading organisation for applied research in Europe, conducting research activities in 66 institutes and research units at locations throughout Germany. Fraunhofer- Gesellschaft employs nearly 24,000, who work with an annual research budget totalling more than €2 billion. Of this, around €1.7 billion is generated through contract research. More than 70 per cent of the Fraunhofer- Gesellschaft's contract research revenue is derived from contracts with industry and from publicly financed research projects.

''We are creative. We shape technology. We design products. We improve methods and techniques. We open up new vistas. In short, we forge the future,'' Fraunhofer states in its web site info.

The 12th Five Year Plan calls for augmenting Indian industrial technologies development at institutes through collaborations with Fraunhofer and like institutions.

The MoU is also a strong indication of German support to Indian economy. This will pay way for induction of latest technologies in capital goods sector. SME in industrial clusters will be the main beneficiaries.

The department of heavy industries plans to actively conduct technology need surveys with units and clusters and run a number of awareness, technology development and assimilation programmes with the help of Fraunhofer.
