Sonia ranks ahead of PM on list of 'World's Most Powerful'

Boston: Indian National Congress president Sonia Gandhi comes in ninth on the list of Forbes publications the 'World's Most Powerful' ahead of prime minister Manmohan Singh who ranks 18th. Three other Indians, all business persons, make it to the list.

Sonia GandhiUS president Barack Obama cedes top spot to Chinese president Hu Jintao who has been named as the world's most powerful person.

The list contains a total of 68 people that Forbes says are people ''who matter''.

The Forbes 2010 list of the 'World's Most Powerful People', which is only the second such that it has issued, contains heads of state, major religious figures, entrepreneurs and outlaws. Forbes said they were chosen "...because, in various ways, they bend the world to their will."

Of the 6.8 billion people on the planet, Forbes' list comprises "the 68 who matter."

Saudi king Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz al Saud is ranked third followed by Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin (4), Pope Benedict XVI (5), German chancellor Angela Merkel (6), UK prime minister David Cameron (7), Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke (8) and Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama (39).
