Justice S H Kapadia sworn in as new Chief Justice of India

Justice Sarosh Homi Kapadia, the seniormost judge of the Supreme Court, was sworn in as the 38th Chief Justice of India (CJI) today. He takes over the post of CJI from K G Balakrishnan.

Pratibha Devisingh Patil administering the oath of office of Chief Justice of India to Shri Justice Sarosh Homi Kapadia, at a Swearing-in Ceremony, in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi The swearing-in of 62-year-old Justice Kapadia by President Pratibha Patil at Rashtrapati Bhawan was attended among others by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his cabinet colleagues, and outgoing chief justice K G Balakrishnan.

Justice Kapadia began his career at the Bombay bar as an advocate in 1974, working his way up to the highest judicial office in the country. He would remain at the helm of the Indian judiciary till 29 September 2012.

As an advocate at the Bombay high court, Kapadia dealt mainly with commercial law. In 1991, he was elevated as judge to the Bombay high court.

Between 1993 and 1999 justice Kapadia served as a special judge dealing with cases pertaining to securities offences. He was subsequently appointed Chief Justice, Uttaranchal High Court in 2003 and then made a Supreme Court judge.
