Eleven scientists selected for Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize 2009

Eleven scientist were selected for the 2009 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for science and technology. The awards were announced at the annual Foundation Day celebrations of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) at Vigyan Bhawan, in New Delhi, today.

The SSBH prize for biological sciences will be conferred on Dr Amitabh Joshi of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Banglore and Dr Bhaskar Saha of the National Centre for Cell Science, Pune.

The prize for chemical sciences is being shared by Dr Charusita Chakravarty of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, New Delhi and Dr Narayanaswamy Jayaraman of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

The prize for earth, atmosphere, ocean and planetary sciences has gone to Dr S K Satheesh of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Dr Giridhar Madras of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Dr Jayant Ramaswamy Haritsa of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore will share the prize for engineering sciences.

The prize for mathematical sciences has gone to Dr Venapally Suresh of the University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad.
 
The prize for medical sciences has gone to Dr Santosh Gajanan Honavar of the L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad.

Dr Rajesh Gopakumar of the Harish-Chandra research Institute, Allahabad and Dr Abhishek Dhar of the Raman Research Institute, Bangalore share the prize for physical sciences.

The Bhatnagar prizes are given to scientists below 45 years of age, for their outstanding scientific contributions made primarily in India over the past last five years preceding the year of the prize. The SSB prize comprises a citation, a plaque and a cash award of Rs5,00,000, and are given to the recipients by the prime minister of India.
