New Delhi: Even as the economy grapples with the prospects of an impending drought - possibly the worst in the last three decades - there is continued favourable news flowing on the industrial front.

The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) registered a 4-per cent growth during the first quarter of the current fiscal, against 2.2 per cent in April-June 2001.

According to the 'quick estimates' of the IIP, released by the Central Statistical Organisation here, all the three sectors constituting the 'general' index have recorded higher growth during April-June 2002 compared to April-June 2001.

While the cumulative first quarter growth rate for 'manufacturing' was 3.7 per cent (compared to 2.6 per cent during April-June 2001), the corresponding figures for 'mining' and 'electricity' stood at 7.6 per cent (minus 1.5 per cent) and 3.6 per cent (2.2 per cent), respectively.

The higher growth rates have been sustained even for the latest recorded month of June 2002, with the general index registering a year-on-year rise of 4 per cent (against 2.6 per cent in June 2001), with the corresponding figures for manufacturing, mining and electricity being 3.6 per cent (3.4 per cent), 9.1 per cent (minus 4.1 per cent) and 3.5 per cent (2.1 per cent), respectively.
