AMD
acquires stake in Transmeta Corp
Boston: Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) the No. 2
microprocessor maker after Intel, has acquired a stake
in Transmeta Corp. for $7.5 million. Transmeta, which
has previously partnered with AMD, focuses solely on developing
semiconductor technologies for other companies and is
best known for its Crusoe and Efficeon computer microprocessors,
which it sold in 2000. In 2005, Transmeta pulled out of
the microprocessor business, under heavy pressure from
Intel.
In 2001, AMD acquired $13.6 million in Transmeta's common
stock as part of a technology licensing agreement between
the two companies.

Hiring
rises in US
132,000 workers were added to the workforce in the US
in June and wages also rose. In the month of May the increase
in employment was to the tune of 190,000 that was also
larger than previously reported, the Labor Department
said in Washington. The unemployment rate held at 4.5
percent, close to a six-year low.
Rising
wages and expanding payrolls are helping consumers withstand
high gasoline prices and the housing recession.
Economists
projected employment would rise by 125,000 following a
previously reported 157,000 May increase. The jobless
rate was expected to remain at 4.5 percent.
Workers'
average hourly earnings rose 6 cents, or 0.3 percent,
after a 0.4 percent increase the previous month. Economists
expected a 0.3 percent increase. Earnings were up 3.9
percent from June of last year.
