Sharma appointed ONGC chief
New Delhi:
The government has appointed R S Sharma as the chairman and managing director (CMD) of Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC).

Sharma was the acting CMD of ONGC, India's biggest oil producer since May 25 last year but will now head the company till January 31, 2011, official sources said.

Sharma was earlier selected for the top job by a head-hunting committee headed by Public Enterprises Selection Board (PSEB) chairman N K Sinha, after conducting interviews of 28 candidates on June 3 and June 4. He was also PESB's first choice in interviews conducted for the job in August last year. However, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), in February this year, had vetoed his appointment as it wanted the selection process to be widened by inviting candidates from the private sector.

Sharma was director (finance), before being appointed the acting head.
