Patil is UPA's choice for president
New Delhi: The UPA-Left combine announced on Thursday
the candidature of veteran Congress leader and Rajasthan
governor Pratibha Patil for the Presidential election.
Congress
president Sonia Gandhi revealed the UPA-Left choice following
a meeting of the ruling coalition and its supporting partners
at the prime minister's residence yesterday evening. The
move is likely to upset NDA's strategy to field vice-president
Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, given that the 72-year-old Patil
is a Maratha married to a Rajput who hails from Shekhawat,
the same region as the former.
Patil's candidature has also ended hopes for Congress
loyalists like Shivraj Patil and Pranab Mukherjee.
