UAE
removes ban on Indian poultry
Mumbai: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has removed
the ban on import of eggs and other poultry products from
India with the UAE minister for environment and water
Mohammed Saeed Al Kindi issuing an administrative decree
lifting the ban imposed on the importing of live birds
and poultry products from countries hit by bird flu the
official Emirates news agency reported yesterday.
It
said the ministry's decision to lift the ban was based
on information from the World Organisation for Animal
Health which gave India a clean chit for the safety measures
taken to get bird flu under total control. The decision
was also based on coordination among the ministry, the
National Emergency Committee and the General Secretariat
of UAE municipalities.
The
UAE had imposed the ban in February 2006, following the
avian flu outbreak reported in India. Other Gulf countries
like Muscat and Doha also had banned Indian poultry following
the outbreak, but it was lifted last year following an
official declaration from OIE (Organisation of Internationale
Epidemia or the World Organisation of Animal Health) on
India's poultry disease free-status, sources said.

Inflation
falls below 5-per cent mark
New Delhi: WPI based inflation fell to 4.85 per cent
for the week ended May 26 as against 5.06per cent the
week before.
The drop is attributed to a fall in prices of essential
food items like pulses, fruits and vegetables and the
higher base of the wholesale price index at the same time
in 2006.
The inflation rate has dropped below the 5-per cent mark
after a gap of 10 months.
The
inflation rate at around the same time last year was 4.99
per cent.
The
Reserve Bank of India has set an inflation target of 5
per cent for this financial year. Even though the inflation
rate is under control, continued rise of liquidity in
the system because of the RBI's purchase of dollar keeps
the possibility of some intervention by the central bank
alive.
