Suzlon's US subsidiary bags turbine contract
Mumbai:
The US-based subsidiary of Suzlon Energy A/S of Denmark, Suzlon Wind Energy Corporation, has won a wind-turbine order estimated to be worth Rs3,200 crore to Rs3,700 crore for the equivalent of 630 MW from the California-based Edison Mission Group (EMG). This is the single largest deal won by the Suzlon group so far, a statement from the company said.

The two-phase contract calls for delivery of 315 MW of turbine capacity in 2008 and another 315 MW of capacity in 2009, which along with previous purchases brings EMG's total committed Suzlon turbine capacity to over 1,000 MW, which makes it Suzlon's biggest customer.

The agreement includes a five-year contract for service and warranty in 2008. The turbines will be sited at various wind farm locations across the US, which were yet to be announced, said the statement. Suzlon has a combined manufacturing base of 2,700 MW of annual capacity, and is undertaking an expansion programme to expand its base to 4,200 MW of capacity by end of financial year 2008.

Alstom gets contract worth Rs255-cr from Delhi Metro
New Delhi:
Power equipment and rolling stock major Alstom has bagged a Rs255-crore contract from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to design, manufacture, supply, install and commission the train control and signalling system for Delhi Metro's two phases.

The company expects the demand for metros or urban transportation systems in Indian market to be higher than the annual average growth in Asia Pacific metro market (of 6.8 per cent) in 2005-15. Company officials said that in the next five years the transport sector of India is expected to witness a total investment of 62 billion.

In India, Alstom is eyeing business from the urban transportation market in Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Nokia gets contract from BSNL
New Delhi:
Nokia Siemens Networks has won part of a 6-million line contract from Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) for setting up broadband infrastructure. The project includes setting up broadband services across 283 cities in 17 States.

Equipment maker UTStarcom has also received a large part of this project.

BSNL will provide a total of six million new copper based connections with the possibility of three million more over the next three years. Subscribers will get multimedia services such as high-speed Internet, IPTV, games and video on demand.

The agreement is for a term of three years and comprises installation and commissioning.

Sony aims for top slot in LCD market in India
Mumbai:
Japanese electronics giant Sony is aiming to grab bag the top slot in LCDs above the 32-inch screen size and is targeting digital camera segment priced upwards of Rs10,000.

The company has identified LCD, digital cameras, handycams and laptops to achieve 30 per cent growth in the country.

The company is targeting the value market segment on the back of introducing technologically advanced products and customer service.

Following its promotion in the recently concluded cricket world cup, it plans to aggressively promote Bravia LCDs in India.

Sony has also launched high definition handycams and Cyber Shot models in the premium range.

The company has a 50 per cent share of the global handycam market and is targeting to sell 3 lakh pieces this year in India. The company has a 30 per cent share in the Indian digital camera market, estimated at 1 million units.

As a part of its retail expansion, Sony plans to open about 350 Sony World and Sony exclusive showrooms in India. Currently it has about 100 Sony World outlets and 150 exclusive Sony showrooms.

Motorcycle makers hit by declining sales
New Delhi:
Top players in the motorcycle market have been hit by declining sales and are rationalizing production and reduce dealer inventory. Auto dealers say Hero Honda, Bajaj Auto and TVS are cutting down dealer billings.

Market leader Hero Honda reported a 6 per cent drop in dealer despatches in May against the same month last year.

Bajaj Auto which has been seeing negative growth in bike sales since February this year saw almost 15 per cent fall in bike sales in May.

According to analysts motorcycle demand has been hit by the interest rate rise. Motorcycle demand hit negative terrain in March, when sales to dealers slid 3.5 per cent followed by another fall in April by 10 per cent as against the comparative period last year.
