Montek Singh joins IMF as
independent evaluator
Washington: Former
finance secretary of the government of India and currently the planning commission member,
Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, has been appointed the first independent Evaluator of the
International Monetary Fund. Dr. Ahluwalia was elected by a 70 per cent majority of the
executive board, which is the final deciding authority for this post.
This appointment is the first for the
global financial institution and the post is next inn prestige only to that of deputy
managing director. Dr. Ahluwalia beat 11 other candidates for the job including formidable
ones like the former Polish finance minister Bracelowski, who spearheaded the big bang
economic reform in Poland. This will be the first time the IMF has subjected its
operations to scrutiny and judgement by an independent evaluator.
Dr. Ahluwalia was selected after a global headhunt was launched with the help of a large
professional head-hunting firm, which had been retained by the IMF to scour the world for
suitable candidates for the posts of independent evaluator.
