Microsoft rewards top brass in India
New Delhi: US-based software major Microsoft on Thursday rewarded the top brass at its Indian
subsidiary with promotions and promoted its director e-commerce and marketing as the company’s new managing director. Sanjay Mirchandani, the present MD who was relocated to India in 1998, has been promoted as regional director to drive strategic business initiatives and development in the entire South Asian region. He will relocate to Singapore and look after the management of seven subsidiaries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, besides India. Microsoft India president Rajiv Nair will take on additional responsibility as senior strategic advisor for Microsoft Asia but continue to be based in Delhi. All three will report to vice-president (Asia-Pacific) Michael Rawding who is located in Tokyo.

India is the third country after the US and Japan, which had the maximum number of one lakh Microsoft certified professionals last October. Microsoft’s business in India is divided into two distinct entities. New Delhi-headquartered Microsoft India, established about 10 years ago, oversees the sales and marketing functions for its entire product range, including Windows operating system and the server softwares. It also focuses on market development activities, including partnerships, tapping vertical markets, education, certification, the ISP market and the developer community. Microsoft India Development Center at Hyderabad runs as an independent operation headed by managing director Srini Koppolu, a techie from Redmond. This is the company’s second software development center outside of the US and is in the process of being augmented to house 300 software engineers by 2002 from the present 85.
