Microsoft rewards top brass
in India
New Delhi: US-based software
major Microsoft on Thursday rewarded the top brass at its Indian
subsidiary with promotions and promoted its director e-commerce and marketing as the
companys new managing director. Sanjay Mirchandani, the present MD who was relocated
to India in 1998, has been promoted as regional director to drive strategic business
initiatives and development in the entire South Asian region. He will relocate to
Singapore and look after the management of seven subsidiaries, including Singapore,
Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, besides India. Microsoft India
president Rajiv Nair will take on additional responsibility as senior strategic advisor
for Microsoft Asia but continue to be based in Delhi. All three will report to
vice-president (Asia-Pacific) Michael Rawding who is located in Tokyo.
India is the third country after the US and Japan, which had the maximum number of one
lakh Microsoft certified professionals last October. Microsofts business in India is divided into two distinct entities.
New Delhi-headquartered Microsoft India, established about 10 years ago, oversees the
sales and marketing functions for its entire product range, including Windows operating
system and the server softwares. It also focuses on market development activities,
including partnerships, tapping vertical markets, education, certification, the ISP market
and the developer community. Microsoft India Development Center at Hyderabad runs as an
independent operation headed by managing director Srini Koppolu, a techie from Redmond.
This is the companys second software development center outside of the US and is in
the process of being augmented to house 300 software engineers by 2002 from the present
