Syndicate Bank plans `ladies only' branches across country
Mumbai: Taking cue from success of mahila co-operative banks, the
Manipal-based Syndicate Bank has embarked on a unique strategy to open "ladies
only" branches across the country perhaps the only national bank in the
country to do so.
Four such branches have already been opened
in Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Calcutta. The bank plans to open more branches across
the country. These branches will be exclusively managed by women employees and will only
accept members of the fairer sex. Syndicate Bank's `Ladies Only Branch' in Matunga in
Mumbai currently has 28 women "manning" the office.
Across the country, Syndicate Bank employs
more than 7,400 women spread across its 1,700 branches, many of them serving as officers
while some have risen to the position of assistant general managers. Syndicate Bank
officials say, while there were initial apprehensions from the customers, they did later
sense a gradual improvement in service. Women, they say, are more dedicated, less
aggressive and committed to their work.
