Ashoke Dutt and Sajiv Thomas quit Citibank
Mumbai: Mr. Ashoke Dutt, who took over as head of Citibank India in the troubled
period of 1993 and was currently heading a cards migration project for the bank in New
York, put in his papers about a fortnight ago.
In India, Mr Dutt was instrumental in launching
Suvidha, an online debit card programme which was started on a test basis in
Bangalore in 1998 and for tying up with Maruti Udyog in October 1997, to set up Citicorp
Maruti Finance to exclusively finance the purchase of Maruti cars.
While it is expected that Mr Dutt will join Morgan Stanley
in London to head its Discover Cards business, people in the know say that he could take
up an offer to head an internet company in Europe.
The bank also lost another senior executive, Mr. Sajeev
Thomas, who was based in Tokyo. Mr Thomas was the head of investment banking at Citibank
(India) over 10 years ago and later moved to Tokyo. At the time of resigning, he was on
the board of directors of Salomon Smith Barneys Japanese operations.
Theres speculation about Mr Thomass new
assignment and the grapevine has it that that he may get into the venture capital
business.

Weston to continue at Bata
India
Calcutta: At a meeting of the board of directors of Bata India Ltd., it was decided
that the tenure of Mr. W K Weston as managing director, be extended for a further period
of two years with effect from March 26, 2000. Weston's re-appointment as managing director
of Bata India was necessitated as the company has yet to find a suitable person who could
replace him.
Mr. Weston, currently the managing director and the regional executive, south-Asia, which
includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, has been responsible for restructuring
of the various business activities of the company, which has resulted in a total
turnaround of the company.
The management of the company will seek shareholders' approval for the extension of the
tenure.
