Two companies get licenses for gateways
New Delhi: The department of telecommunications today
issued licenses to two companies for the setting up of internet service provider gateways.
Global Electronic Commerce Services, a wholly owned
subsidiary of Global Telesystems Limited, and Bharti-BT Internet Limited, a joint venture
between the Bharti group and British Telecom, have secured the licenses.
Global is likely to develop the gateways in eight
locations -- Mumbai, Bangalore, New Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad, Calcutta, Ahmedabad and
Chennai. Both companies are planning significant investments towards this end and plan to
offer the services on the Ku band frequency.
