Indian in run for London mayoralty
London: A person of Indian descent is making waves in London. He is
bidding to become the mayor of London, and his effort is now being taken seriously. Ram
Gidoomal entered the race no more than as a symbolic minority candidate, but now British
newspapers say he should not be dismissed lightly. The London mayoral elections seem to be in a mess. First, front-runner novelist
Jeffrey Archer opted out following a controversy, while Labour Party candidate Ken
Livingstone has been also stirred up controversy. Against this background, British
newspapers feel Mr Gidoomal stands a chance. Mr Gidoomal claims he has been approached to
stand as an independent candidate with the backing of prime minister Tony Blair against
the official Labour candidate.
With about a quarter of the population of
London comprising ethnic minorities, a possible low turnout, a large vote from the
minorities and some support from the main parties can indeed spring a surprise.
