Inflation rate comes down
New Delhi: In the week ended 27 November 1999 the rate of inflation was
2.46 per cent. Prices of food articles, vegetables and fruits have shown a downtrend.

Bank strike on 27th
New Delhi: Private and public sector bank employees will go on a one-day
strike on 27 December demanding revision of their salary structures. The National
Federation of Bank Employees is spearheading the strike. Federation officials said the
strike is in protest against the Indian Banks Associations unresponsive
attitude and its efforts to spread distorted versions of facts while attempting to foist a
wage freeze on bank employees.

RBI seeks details of
Ucos Hong Kong operations
Calcutta: The Reserve Bank of India has sought certain clarifications
from Uco Bank about its Hong Kong branch operations. The Indian mission in Hong Kong too
has sought details of accounts of some companies with the bank's Hong Kong branch.
Uco Bank is one of the banks cited by the M.S. Verma
committee as weak. The committee has also suggested closure of the banks foreign
offices.

Centurion Bank plans
ATM cards
Hyderabad: Centurion Bank has tied up with MasterCard to broaden its card
base and to enlarge the use of its ATM cards. The banks managing director, V.S.
Srinivasan, said the bank will issue ATM cards in February, allowing card holders to
withdraw money from any MasterCard ATM machine.
The bank has so far focussed on debit cards in order to
avoid the risks associated with credit cards.

Exim Bank signs MoU with
Tunisian banks
Ahmedabad: The Exim Bank of India has signed a memorandum of
understanding with two Tunisian banks to jointly promote trade and industrial links
between Indian and Tunisian companies. The Tunisian banks are Societe Tunisienne de Banque
and Banque International Arabe de Tunise.
Tunisias minister of international cooperation and
external investment Fethi Merdassi said that there is high potential for increasing
bilateral trade and investment between India and Tunisia and that the MoU will serve to
bridge the information gap between the businessmen of the two countries.

Bank
Bangalore: Vysya Bank is planning to set up 'self-banks' in Hyderabad,
Visakhapatnam and other cities. The 'self-bank' is a technology-driven concept in personal
banking.

Special WTO session on
17th
Geneva: A special session of the general council of the World Trade
Organisation is being convened on 17 December. The session will attempt to bridge the
differences that emerged at the Seattle ministerial meeting. WTO sources said the idea is
to reconvene the ministerial conference at an early date.
WTO director general Michael Moore said the initiative is
based on instruction from the chairman of the Seattle conference, Charlene Barshefsky, the
US trade representative.
