S.K. Gupta to be VSNL head
Mumbai: S.K. Gupta, presently chief general manager, Gujarat telecom circle, is tipped to be the chairman and managing director of Videsh Sanchar Nigam.

The Economic Times, in a report said, Mr Gupta's name has been approved by the cabinet committee on appointments. The Public Enterprises Selection Board had earlier shortlisted Mr Gupta and Narendra Sharma from among 17 candidates for the post.

The post had become vacant following the retirement of B.K. Syngal on 30 June 1998. Amitabh Kumar has been functioning as the acting chairman and managing director of VSNL.

Zarir J. Cama is HSBC CEO
Mumbai: Zarir J. Cama will be the new chief executive officer (India) of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation.

Mr Cama replaces Dyfrig John.

Mr Cama will assume charge on 1 October and he will also head the group's investment banking companies in India -- HSBC Capital Markets India and HSBC Securities India Holdings.

Mr John's new assignment will be as deputy chairman and chief executive officer of HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad.

Kavarana to be chairman of Tata Infotech
Mumbai: F.K. Kavarana, executive director of Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company and a director of Tata Infotech, is set to take over as chairman of Tata Infotech.

Mr Kavarana will replace F.C. Kohli, who will step down in accordance with the Tata norm of retiring at the age of 75.

Besides Mr Kohli, the Tata Infotech board consists of managing director Nirmal Jain, J.K. Setna, N.N. Kampani, S Ramdorai, N.A. Soonawala, Shyamal Gupta and N.A. Palkivala. 

Both Mr Kohli and Mr Palkhivala have stepped from the Tata Sons board.

B.K. Modi quits Xerox Modicorp
New Delhi: B.K. Modi has resigned as chairman of Xerox Modicorp. He has handed over the reins of the company to Pat Martin of Xerox Corporation.

This move follows an agreement between Modicorp and Xerox after the US firm decided to take controlling stake in the Indian venture.

Mr Martin, president, developing market operations, Xerox, will be responsible for developing Xerox's business in India and other emerging markets.
