19 April 01.10 PM: Indices holding on to gainsnews

After recording new lifetime highs, the indices are holding on to their gains in early afternoon trades. The up trend is not very broad-based as significant gains on select heavyweights are holding the indices. A large number of frontline stocks are looking lacklustre.

The Sensex is trading higher by 129 points at 11951 at 01.10 PM.

The Nifty is trading higher by 42 points at 3560.

All the gainers from early trades are holding on to the gainers in early afternoon trades as well.

Reliance Industries has gained further and is now trading with gains of over 4 per cent. The stock has added over 8 per cent in the last three sessions.

Metal stocks are also holding firm and Hindalco continues to be the biggest gainer from the sector with gains of more than 3 per cent. Nalco is also trading more than 3 per cent higher.

Steel stocks SAIL and Tata Steel are also trading with gains of close to 3 per cent each. Copper producer Sterlite has added over 2.5 per cent.

BHEL is the biggest gainer among Nifty stocks with gains of over 4 per cent.

Sun Pharma has gained further in early afternoon trades and is now trading with gains of over 4 per cent.

HDFC and IPCL are the other major gainers among index stocks.

HCL Technologies is the biggest loser among index stocks after the company's results failed to excite the market. The stock has given up close to 5 per cent.

Infosys has given up further ground and is trading more than 1.5 per cent lower. Satyam has also slipped into the red. TCS has given up all its early gains and is trading flat.

Zee Tele has declined further and is now trading nearly 3.5 per cent lower.

VSNL, L&T, ACC and BPCL are the other losers among Nifty stocks.

Mid-caps are also holding on to their gains but gains on the mid-cap index are lower than the frontline indices. The index is trading nearly 0.65 per cent higher. Market breadth has declined but continues to be positive on the NSE.

TCI Finance, Essar Oil and Sadbhav Engineering are among the major gainers in mid-caps.

BL Kashyap, Nicco Corp and Onward Technologies are among the mid-cap losers.
