The first quarter (January-March) of 2011 saw the combined desk-based and mobile PC market total to nearly 2.6 million registering a 6.2 per cent growth over the same period of the previous calendar year, according to a leading research firm.

"This growth was primarily driven by the mobile PC market which grew 23 per cent in the first quarter of 2011," Gartner principal research analyst Vishal Tripathi said.

"There was a slump in consumer demand in the first quarter, so the market did not grow as expected.

"Enterprise and small and midsize business buying helped the market to achieve growth in the quarter. Government buying also contributed, as it was the last quarter of the financial year," he added.

All major multinational PC vendors reported double-digit growth in mobile PC shipments in the first quarter of 2011 with multinational brands contributing over half of the total PC shipments in the first quarter of 2011.  Acer, Dell , HP and Lenovo, the top four vendors, accounted for 50.4 per cent of total shipments in the first quarter of 2011, according to Gartner.

Local vendor HCL's share of the PC shipments in the first quarter of 2011 stood at 7.1 per cent.

Dell India which came in at the second spot in PC shipments after Hewlett Packard (HP) in the fourth quarter of 2010, regained its India top position with 16.7 per cent out of total 2.6 million units of overall PC (desktops, netbooks, laptops) shipments in the first quarter of 2011.
