Chinese news portal plans Hindi website news
20 August 2008

One of China's leading news portals, People's Daily Online, is mulling a Hindi version of its website to attract more traffic from India in the near future.

The website, the online arm of the influential People's Daily newspaper, was launched on 1 January 1997, and has rapidly emerged as a leading news portal in China. The website claims about 100 million visits daily.

According to Brian Zhang, Editor of People's Daily Online, Indians were among the website's top 10 readers from around the world, topped by Chinese, Americans, French, British, Germans and Australians.

The decision to launch a Hindi version of the site reflects the growing economic ties between India and China.

Currently the portal offers its content in Chinese, Arabic, English, French, Japanese, Russian and Spanish, acting as a bridge between China and the world.

Reiterating the reasons for the delay in launching the Hindi version, deputy director of people.com.cn, Huang Qixiang, said, that high costs have impeded the launch of proposed Hindi version so far. He added Hindi version of the site would be started as soon as it could be done economically. So far Indians have been viiting the English version of the website.

"We know that Indians are among our ardent readers," Huang said.

The news portal, which has 39 local websites focusing on various provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions as well as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, is under the People's Daily, the official mouthpiece of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC).

The 60-year People's Daily print edition has a current circulation of three million and according to Unesco is among the world top 10. It is also among the most influential newspapers in China. Also published under the People's Daily banner are 10 newspapers whose material is available to the website.

The publications include including People's Daily Overseas Edition, East China News, South China News, Market Daily, International Financial Daily, Jiangnan Times, Global Times, Securities Times, Health Times, Satire and Humor and six monthly magazines including The Earth, News Front, Listed Companies, Times Trend, People Forum.
