The department of publications of the ministry of urban development has developed an e-gazette to maintain all central government and delhi NCR gazette notifications, catalogued date-wise, month-wise, part-wise and subject-wise. The effort operationalise "gazetting" is aimed at reucing the time and facilitate easy accessibility for the bona fide users all over the country without having to undertake tedious travel, etc.

The e-gazette process will also help researchers, litigation, settlement of legal documents, etc. The printed version will continue to remain while the e-gazette will have its own distinctive utility.

As part of the modern e-governance concept, uploading the gazette notification in the especially created e-gazette website, has become imperative for facilitating bona fide users to obtain the copies of notifications immediately on its being uploaded on payment of the prescribed fee.

At present the department houses all the notifications dating back to 1962. The total number of gazette notifications now in the record room run to around 6,171,000. Gazette notifications prior to 1962 are available in the National Archives.

The revenue earnings of the government through sale of gazette notifications are around Rs5 crores per annum, which the e-gazette is expected to boost, due to better indexing, search and download features.
