Google integrates services to offer universal search news
21 May 2007

Mumbai: Google, the world''s biggest web search company, is integrating its search services, using a different route that combines the services of videos, images, news, maps, books, and web sites into one universal search.

Currently, Google prompts users to search separately for images, videos, news, maps and books. But, now, with this universal search, users will not have to go through different search properties to find a wide range of information on the same topic. The change would, however, be over a period of time.

Google is implementing a new technical infrastructure that will let its search engine handle intense computational tasks required for this project, the company said. Google has also added navigation links above search results to suggest additional relevant information.

"For example, a search for ''python'' will now generate links to Google Blog Search, Google Book Search, Google Groups and Google Code," the company stated.

"Google''s vision for universal search is to ultimately search across all its content sources, compare and rank all the information in real time, and deliver a single, integrated set of search results that offers users precisely what they are looking for," the company said.

"The ultimate goal of universal search is to break down the silos of information that exist on the web, and provide the very best answer every time a user enters a query. While we still have a long way to go, today''s announcements are a big step in that direction," Marissa Mayer, vice resident of search products and user experience, Google, said.

Google, meanwhile, has added navigation links to search results to suggest additional relevant information available through other search features such as blogs, book, groups, and code.
