NEC Corporation offers thin client technology to Sify Ltd. news

Chennai: The Japanese company NEC Corporation has agreed to supply the city based Sify Ltd its virtual PC centres (VPCC) to promote thin client computing in India.

NEC Corporation through its Indian arm NEC India Pvt Ltd will offer 6 servers-Express5800/VPCC with middleware and client OS- and 100 thin client terminals to Sify. The latter in turn will offer thin client computing services to its customers as an outsourced service.

The partnership aims at the installation of one lakh client terminal units and 6,000 server units within the first three years of business in India. Sify will also promote the installation of VPCCs in its Internet cafés and customer call centers.

Thought the commercial personal computer market is growing at 24 per cent per annum in India, corporates are looking at cheaper alternatives. And thin client computing helps them to reduce the total cost of ownership.

As per initial plans, Sify will install the NEC servers in its data centres and look at the domestic corporate segment. The company will promote thin client computing through a dedicated sales force, in addition to its current enterprise sales channel. In addition the company will install the servers in its call centre and 3,500 Internet cafes.
