Google Inc has launched an advanced version of its search engine for searching PC hard drives and the internet. Available as a public beta test version, Google Desktop 2's new free to users programme also incorporates a new look and several new user-friendly tools.

In addition to delivering search results, it monitors the web user's search habits and provides relevant information in, what it has christened the Sidebar, a resizable and moveable vertical window.

One module aggregates e-mail messages from a variety of accounts, including Google's Gmail service or each user's internet service provider. Another displays provide personalised news headline snapshots, what's popular on the web, etc. Yet another module syndicated web feeds from various sites without the user having to ask for it. These feeds can be viewed on the Sidebar and can be customised to suit users' requirements.

Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! Have been locked in fierce competition to expand their presence on user PC desktops.
