division to New York-headquartered Aeroflex Incorporated, for $85 million.
UbiNetics
is a global supplier of software and silicon IP for digital wireless terminals,
driving development of 3G mobile wireless technology. It currently has two
core businesses: a 3G terminal software development and handset modem reference
design business, and a 3G test and measurement solutions business. The world's
major handset and device manufacturers, infrastructure developers and network
operators rely on its products, services and solutions Aeroflex
is a leading designer, developer and manufacturer of automated testing solutions
and microelectronics for the aerospace, defence and broadband communications
markets. The test and measurement division being sold to Aeroflex, designs
and develops a range of sophisticated 3G test products. These are used by
leading network equipment developers and network operators to debug new network
features, interoperability analysis and network 'stress' testing. The
sale will now allow UbiNetics to focus exclusively on its remaining 3G terminal
software development business including it's multimode 3G protocol stack and
3G modem reference designs, being licensed to leading mobile handset and chip
set developers. "The
sale of the 3G test and measurement arm of UbiNetics will enable us to concentrate
more investment into global R&D," commented Bjorn Krylander, CEO,
UbiNetics. "We are particularly looking to accelerate R&D operations
in Bangalore, which will be a key market as Asian handset manufactures make
the transition to 3G." UbiNetics
will continue to provide essential core technology to enable these companies
to compete in the global market for next generation devices, particularly
in the Asia region. UbiNetics is one of a few companies in this sector with
an established track record derived from extensive experience in global WCDMA. The
company's 'WCDMA test mobiles', used by global 3G infrastructure manufacturers
and network operators, have put UbiNetics at the centre of WCDMA interoperability
testing.
