Government to set up five centres of excellence for the telecom sectornews
17 October 2007
Union minister for information technology and telecom A Raja said on Tuesday 16 October that the government would set up five centres of excellence (CoE) in the first half of 2008, to improve R&D infrastructure in the telecom sector. Altogether, the government had proposed to set up eight CoEs across the country, of which three will be set up this year.

"These CoEs will develop telecom and IT solutions for rural areas at an affordable price," Raja said at an event organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

The first two CoEs will be set up by the Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs). IIM Ahmedabad in association with telecom company Idea Cellular, will look into ''Telecom Policy Governance, Regulation and Management, Customer Care and Marketing''. IIT Kharagpur in association with Vodafone Essar, will look into ''Next generation Telecom Networks and Network Technology''.

The third CoE will be established by IIT Delhi, in partnership with Bharti Airtel. MoUs to this effect were signed on Tuesday among the companies and academic institutions. The remaining centres are still in process.
