Chennai: The central government-owned Manganese Ore India Limited (MOIL) has signed an MoU with South Africa's Bateman Engineering to invest in ferromanganese mines overseas.

On completing its investigations as to the potential for MOIL to invest, Bateman Engineering will negotiate a separate agreement with the Indian company to design and build its plants. It would also provide smelting furnaces. The MoU is expected to further strengthen the relationship between India and South Africa in the mining sector.

Minister of state for steel Dr Akhilesh Das who met the two-member delegation in New Delhi, was briefed on the mining potential of different ores in South Africa where India could also possibly set up joint ventures.
