Mumbai:
The Indian government is planning to initiate examination
of the Patent Act, 1970, with a view to fulfil its international
obligations which will come into force from 1 January
2005 under the TRIPS Agreement of the WTO Agreement.
These
relate primarily to introduction of product patent protection
in all fields of technology. Other amendments as are
necessary to simplify / rationalise procedural aspects
and modernisation of patent offices will also be taken
up.
The
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), along with the
Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP),
the ministry of commerce and industry, Government of
India, is organising a one-day interactive session on
the subject 'Amendments to the Patents Act, 1970' on
22 August 2003 at Hotel Oberoi Towers, Mumbai.
Eminent
speaker who have confirmed to participate are: Dr R
A Mashelkar, director-general, CSIR and secretary, DSIR;
A E Ahmad , IAS , joint secretary DIPP; N K Garg, assistant
controller, Indian Patent Office; and Dr Swati Piramal,
director, Nicholas Piramal India Ltd.
The
objective of the interactive session will be to seek
opinions, views and suggestions on major issues of patentability
and implementation of the Indian Patent Law and operation
of patent offices.
