India now has over 250 million telephone users

New Delhi: Nevermind the fight for spectrum, the good news is that the telephone density in India has crossed the 22 percent mark in October 2007. October 2007 saw an addition of a humungous 256.66 million subscribers, according to figures released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Of these 256.66 million, 8.05 million new additions have been part of the wireless segment, while the 39.41 million new subscribers were added in the landline segment. September 2007 had seen an addition of 7.80 million new subscribers in the wireless segment, and 39.58 million in the landline segment, according to TRAI. Growth in the number of broadband users remained steady, with 2.69 million additions this October, compared to 2.67 million in September 2007 Telephone density in India now stands at 22.52 percent as of October 2007. It was at 21.85 percent in September 2007.
