Shipping growth helps major ports register 1.78% growth in April 2018

Major Indian ports recorded a growth of 1.78 per cent and handled a combined 56.81 million tonnes of cargo during in April 2018, marginally ahead ofthe 55.82  million tonnes in April 2017.

The nine ports that registered a positive traffic growth include Kolkata (including Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal.
The highest growth was registered by Kolkata (12.56 per cent), followed by Kamarajar  (12.08 per cent), New Mangalore (11.41 per cent), Paradip (11.12 per cent) and Chennai (7.55 per cent).
During April 2018, Deendayal (Kandla) Port handled the highest volume of traffic at 9.32 million tonnes (mt) (16.41-per cent share), followed by Paradip with 8.15 mt (14.35-per cent share), JNPT with 5.89 mt 10.37-per cent share), Visakhapatnam with 5.13 mt (09.03-per cent share) and Mumbai with 4.98 million tonnes (8.76-per cent share). 
Together, these five ports handled around 60 per cent of the combined traffic handled by the major port.
Commodity-wise percentage share of petroleum, oils, and lubricants was the highest at 28.30 per cent, followed by container (20.88 per cent), Thermal & Steam Coal (17.06 per cent), other miscellaneous cargo (13.17 per cent), coking and other coals (7.41 per cent), iron ore and pellets (6.98 per cent), other liquids (4.29 per cent), finished fertilisers (1.02 per cent) and FRM (0.89 per cent).
