Maruti, Ford, TVS sales continue to spurt in January

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, TVS Motor Co and Ford Motor Co's Indian unit today reported strong vehicle sales growth for January despite raising prices to offset higher raw material costs.
Maruti sold 109,743 vehicles in January, up 15 per cent from a year earlier even though India's biggest car maker by sales increased prices of some models by Rs1,000-Rs10,000 last month.
Local sales at the Indian unit of Suzuki Motor Corp rose 24 per cent to 100,422 vehicles, but exports plunged 36 per cent to 9,321 units.
Maruti sold 72,479 small cars - its bread-and-butter segment - during the month, up 24 per cent from a year earlier. The company sells several small car models including the Alto, Swift and A-Star.
Separately, Ford India Ltd said it sold 10,026 vehicles in January compared with 2,453 units a year earlier. It sold 8,600 units of the Figo small car. The company raised prices by up to 2 per cent for all models last month.
TVS Motor said its vehicle sales grew 30 per cent to 165,152 units. Local motorcycle and scooter sales rose 30 per cent to 142,227 units while three-wheeler sales more than doubled to 3,427 units. Two-wheeler exports jumped 21 per cent to 19,498 units.
