Car sales in India up 13% in April 2023; Maruti Suzuki continues to lead

Total car sales by automobile companies in India in April 2023 increased by 13 per cent year-on-year to 3,31,513 units against 2,93,438 units sold in April last year. However, April figures were 1.3 per cent lower compared to the 3,36,046 units sold in March 2023. 

Maruti Suzuki continued to lead the pack with a total of 1,37,320 units sold in April 2023 against 1,21,995 units sold in April last year – a growth of 12.6 per cent year-on-year. 
Hyundai Motors (India) Ltd, the second-largest carmaker in the country, reported sales of 49,701 units in April 2023 against 44,001 units sold in April last year, showing an increase of 13 per cent. 
Tata Motors, the third-largest carmaker in the country, reported sales of 47,010 units in April 2023 against 41,590 units sold during April last year, showing a growth of 13 per cent. 
Mahindra reported sales of 34,698 units in April 2023 against 22,526 units sold in April 2022, with a 54 per cent surge in volume.
Kia Motors was placed fifth largest carmaker in India with a sales volume of 23,216 unit in April 2023 against 19,019 units sold in April 2022, showing an increase of 22.1 per cent. 
Toyota Kirloskar Motor followed with total sales of 14,162 units in April 2023 against 15,085 units sold in April last year -  a decline of 6.1 per cent in volume sales. 
Another Japanese manufacturer, Honda Cars India, stood at the seventh position with total sales of 5,313 units against 7,874 units sold in April 2022 – a decline of 32.5 per cent year-on-year. 
MG stood eighth with sales of 4,551 units in April 2023 against 2,008 units sold in April last year- a growth of 126.6 per cent year-on-year. Renault was ninth with local sales of 4,323 units in April 2023 against 7,594 units sold in April last year, showing a decline of 43.1 per cent year-on-year. Skoda, Volkswagen and Nissan Citroen and Jeep were in the last in the pack with low sales volumes.
