Car sales hit slow lane in January

Carmakers in India reported lower sales in January 2013 hit by rising fuel prices and a general decline in demand for select models.
Maruti Suzuki India, the country's largest carmaker reported a decline in sales in January, its first in five months, pulled down by a sharp fall in exports. Maruti Suzuki said domestic car sales in creased in January.
Maruti sold 114,205 total vehicles in January 2013 against 115,433 vehicles sold in January 2012, a 1.1 per cent year-on-year decline.
Domestic sales, however, rose 2 per cent while exports declined 22 per cent.
Rival Hyundai Motor India managed to grow marginally in the domestic market while posting double-digit growth in exports.
Hyundai's sales in India rose 4.25 per cent to 52,024 units in January 2013 against 49,901 units sold in January 2012. Domestic sales were up 1.19 per cent while exports grew almost 11 per cent to 17,722 units in January 2013 against 16,001 units exported in January 2012.
