India's first electric superbike showcased at Auto Expo 2018

Auto Expo 2018 featured many electric vehicles (EVs) from cruisers to motorcycles to four wheelers.

The Emflux ONE, from Bengaluru startup, Emflux has been designed on lines of a superbike, but having the silence and stealth associated with electric vehicles. Except for the brakes, tyres and the suspension, all other parts of the motorcycle have been designed and engineered in-house.

As the electric drivetrain components available did not match with required specifications for the motorcycle, and engineers at the company, therefore decided to develop all the components in-house.

The drivetrain comprises the battery pack, the BMS, an on-board charger, the motor controller, and the motor controlled by a powerful master controller capable of running powerful neural networks.

The all-digital control helps to improve performance and convenience and allows for over-the-air updates. According to the team, the vehicle's circuits are some of the most power-dense circuits in the industry

UM Motorcycles showcased its first electric two-wheeler offering for India, the Renegade Thor. Like the Renegade, the Thor is also a cruiser, an electric one though, carrying a price tag of Rs9.9 lakh. It is also the most expensive electric motorcycle to go on sale in India.

According to commentators, the Thor is styled on the lines of a cruiser, and it is only when the electric motor which is placed under the faux fuel tank is seen that one can make it out as an electric bike.

The Thor draws power from a 30kW motor which produces 70 Nm of torque.

The Thor is also the first electric cruiser in the world to feature a 5-speed gearbox and according to UM the 5-speed gearbox (with a belt drive) lowers the load on the powerplant which helps to increase the range of the bike.

According to UM, the Thor has a 270km range, 180kph top speed with 80 per cent of the battery capable of being charged in 40 minutes with the fast charger.

Bookings for the Thor are expected to start in April and deliveries will start by end-2018.
