Chennai: Indian Institute of Bankers (IIB) has launched a new course, diploma in bank financial management, in collaboration with Institute of Canadian Bankers (ICB), Montreal, Canada.

In this course, the participants will learn how to manage the many tradeoffs involved in running a bank, such as derivative products. A key part of the course is the exercise in managing a virtual bank.

Using a simulation model called ‘Bankmod’, the students will be given exercises in decision making — they would be asked to take credit and investment decisions based on a mock balance sheet of a customer, under a given set of regulations. They could then be required to reappraise the proposal, under changed regulations.

IIB president V Leeladhar says the diploma is a “blend of theoretical and practical training to sharpen the operational skills of professionals.” IIB has also put in place a scheme of web-based education for candidates for the diploma to clarify any doubts.

ICB provides the software and the courseware for the diploma, which has been customised to suit the Indian banking system. The tie-up with the Canadians is one of the many collaborations IIB has with overseas bodies. Recently, IIB also tied up with Securities Institute of Australia for offering a MS level programme on financial advising.
