World Bank approves $430 million loan for Mumbai suburban railway system

The World Bank has approved a loan of $430 million for financing Mumbai Urban Transport Project - II (MUTP II), minister of state for railways K H Muniyappa informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply today.

MUTP II project involves laying a fifth and sixth line between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai and suburban Kurla station and construction of fifth and sixth lines between Thane and Diva on the Central Railway.

The project also proposes construction of a sixth line between Mumbai Central and suburban Borivali station on the Western Railway and extension of Harbour Line from Andheri to Goregaon.

MUTP II also envisages conversion of suburban trains from     DC to AC traction.

Besides, the project involves procurement and manufacture of electro motive units (EMU), setting up of maintenance facilities for EMUs, laying of stabling lines for EMUs as also technical studies and institutional strengthening studies.

The project also involves resettlement and rehabilitation of project-affected households, which will be funded by state agencies.

MUTP II will also gives emphasis to improvement of railway stations and controlling trespassing on railway lines.

The project is expected to be completed by 2014-15.
